Alaskan Malamutes are large and powerful dogs, but very sweet and
affectionate towards their owners and children, and friendly towards people
in general. This breed is the native Alaskan Arctic breed, and was
originally used by Mahlemiut Eskimos of Alaska for pulling sleds due to its
amazing endurance and strength. The Malamute was also used by the Mahlemiut
Eskimos to "babysit" their children while the Eskimos would hunt.
The "Mal" makes a great family pet, enjoys being outside, but also loves being inside
and spending time with its human "pack." Alaskan Malamutes are
pack-oriented, and enjoy the presence of other animals, BUT tend to be
same-sex aggressive, and do not get along well with dogs of the same sex,
unless raised with the dog. Malamutes can be taught to get along with cats
and smaller animals, but again, only if introduced at a young age. Though
Alaskan Malamutes may look very "intimidating", they would make poor guard
dogs, as they are generally too friendly.

"Standard" Alaskan Malamutes vs. "Giant" Alaskan Malamutes: The standard weight for an Alaskan Malamute is 75-85 lbs. 23-25 inches
at the shoulders."Giant" Alaskan Malamutes are generally considered to be in the 110+ lb.
range. Our Giant Alaskan Malamutes can weigh anywhere from 120-190 lbs. at full
maturity, and are considerably larger in height at the shoulders.
Since our Giants are so much larger than standard, they can take up to three
years to reach maturity. It is not uncommon for a pup to grow at a rate of
3-5 lbs a week during the first few months, and during this time, it is
crucial to feed the correct food for the breed type, and not over-feed while
the bones are developing.
The Giant Alaskan Malamute's temperament is the same as a standard Alaskan
Malamute. The only difference in the two is the size.
Occasionally we may have a litter or two a year which produces smaller than "Giant" pups, though though these pups are larger than standard. This is to
give some variety to customers who may not want a dog so large. If we do
produce pups smaller in size, it will be stated on our website, as we do not
wish to mislead our customers in any way.
We are very select in choosing our Giant Alaskan Malamute breeding stock, as
we want to ensure that all of our breeders have full "Giant" bloodlines, and
are not mixed with Standards. While some breeders are mixing the Standards
with the Giants, and stating that the pups are Giants, it is important to
undertsand that there is no way of knowing what size the pups will be in
doing so. Some may be Standards, some may be Giants, and some may be in
between. So it is easy to mislead potential customers in believing that the
pups will be "Giants" when the bloodlines are mixed. We believe here at
Arctic Shores that we should deliver what we promise, and give our customers
"True Giants", and this is accomplished through careful selection, and
consideration of each breeding.

Our Location:
Arctic Shores Kennels is located at beautiful Stone Gate, and is situated on a large, private lake in the northwestern sector of the Stone Gate preserve. Family estates are nearby. The protection of the preserve provides a safe, spacious, and wholesome environment for our Siberian Huskies and Giant Alaskan Malamutes.
Stone Gate is a forty-three acre family estate and private wildlife preserve located in a remote area of Virginia. It is less than forty-five minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway which straddles the top of the Appalachian Mountain Range from Maine to Georgia.
During the day our pups are allowed to run together in a very large area which is kept clean on a regular basis. All of our babies are introduced to children and other animals at a very early age, which makes them very well socialized from birth.
Our 2300 sq. ft. home was recently dedicated solely to our puppies, therefore the pups are raised inside an actual home, and are given much love
and socialization. This allows us the opportunity to bond with each and every pup from birth. And to give the new mom and babies extra special attention. All of our new pups are given their vaccinations on schedule, and dewormed on a regular basis.
